City of Choluteca
The large city of Choluteca is located within the Department of Choluteca.
It was officially established as "Villa de Jerez de Choluteca", and is one of the most historic cities in the country. The downtown area, with its cathedral, central park, and other structures, is one of the most well preserved colonial areas of Honduras.
The port of San Lorenzo, Honduras's main port in the Pacific, is within walking distance of the city of Choluteca. All imported goods that enter the country through the Pacific, come through this port. As Choluteca is an important commercial center, businesspersons and tourists enjoy a variety of quality hotels, restaurants, and places to visit.
LOCATION
Choluteca is the only city in Honduras situated both by the Pan-American Highway and the Inter-Oceanic Corridor that connects the Pacific ports of La Unión (El Salvador), Henecán (Honduras) and Corinto (Nicaragua) with the Caribbean ports of Puerto Cortés (Honduras) and Puerto Barrios (Guatemala).
Touring the Town
Stroll through downtown colonial Choluteca. This city offers the best preserved colonial town in the country, so a walk through its center is a delight for those who enjoy colonial architecture. Of singular interest is the house where the national hero was born, José Cecilio del Valle. Valle's house is located on the main street, almost opposite the central park. Another building of singular beauty is the Cathedral of Choluteca. We recommend you do the walk in the afternoon, shortly before sunset, so as to avoid the high heat of the day.
FACILITIES
The city of Choluteca has a regional hospital and a social security hospital (Instituto Hondureño del Seguro Social), several private practices for health, dentistry offices, and clinical labs.
There are several private bilingual schools, and two universities.
Choluteca has an airstrip suitable for private planes. It is an easy two hour drive north to the capital city, Tegucigalpa, where there is a major international airport.
